Perfectionists

Problems of Perfectionists

We all want to do well, right? We’re pushed to always try our best and expect great results from ourselves. So what happens when we take it too far? I know I’m guilty of being a perfectionist; I’m sure some of you are too.

How We Got Here

Maybe you have high standards. Or maybe you do well at most things. Or maybe you’re taking a leap and trying something new. These are all great characteristics to have and things to do. However, they can also lead us to become perfectionists.

We know that we want to do well, so we try our hardest and usually get good results. When we become too used to always doing well, doing new things can be scary. We continue to be perfectionists with something that we may not be able to be perfect at.

The Problem with Perfection

When we get too used to always doing well, it can become a crippler. What do I mean? Have you ever been scared to begin something? to write a paper? to start your business? to talk to someone? Being scared to start something can be caused by a lot of things. But many times, it’s because we’re scared to fail. We’re scared we won’t meet the standards-whether they’re ours or someone else’s.

It’s ok to take your time starting, but sometimes you become too afraid to start from fear that it won’t turn out perfect. When this happens, we have problems.

How Do We Get Through It?

It’s hard. I had a hard time starting this blog because I was scared to fail at it. But, you can’t let that fear get in your way. You need to find a way to be ok with the results. Then, you have to just jump into whatever it is you are trying.

Getting over your fears of not being perfect is hard. But, we have ways to help ourselves. For instance, you can find a cheerleader. This is someone who can help support you when you find it hard to start. Trust me, they can be a huge help. Or you can double check your goals. Your goals should be realistic. Realize that you may struggle with something new at first. Embrace that and adapt your goals accordingly.

Feeling the need to be perfect at everything can be hard. When it prevents us from even trying or starting something, it’s even worse. But, you’ll be able to overcome it with some confidence and other strategies. Let us know what works for you in the comments!
